This week, Chris Vanden Heuvel, Superintendent of Healdsburg Unified School District, talked about how the schools in Healdsburg worked through the COVID crisis. He then shared some of the physical improvements they were able to make to the campuses while students were learning remotely. It was obviously a herculean effort by all involved. We also thanked the outgoing leadership of the Interact Club and welcomed the new team. They shared some of the projects they worked on over the year including two with Reach for Home and porch visits with a number of local seniors. Some pictures from that event are below the embedded video.

We are thrilled to present the Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise’s 11th annual Teacher Appreciation Recognition. Each year we celebrate those teachers and staff who have inspired our students and their peers and who have been nominated by the principals of the Healdsburg Unified School District and Westside Elementary School. This year’s recognition holds special significance as we honor those who have risen to the challenges of educating our community’s children during a pandemic while also navigating the health, safety, financial, social and educational concerns of their own families. As you can agree, this was no normal year. Also joining us today are our elected officials and their representatives who have also met the same challenges while guiding our community through this pandemic and who will make their presentations honoring our special guests. Joining us to present their special commendations shortly were: Senator Mike McGuire, representing California’s 2nd Senate District, Will Tesconi, Field Representative for Assemblyman Jim Wood, representing the 2nd Assembly District, Jenny Chamberlain, Chief of Staff for James Gore, our Fourth District Supervisor, Evelyn Mitchell, Mayor of Healdsburg and Chris Vanden Heuvel, Superintendent who has supported this program through the years. Our award recipients for 2021 were: Kelly Mace, Counselor at Healdsburg High School Gloria Hurtado, mathematics teacher and chair at Healdsburg Jr High School Aida Pacheco, lead teacher and tutorial coordinator at Healdsburg Elementary School Irma Figueroa, third-grade teacher at Healdsburg Elementary School’s Fitch Mountain Campus Teresa Brooks, sixth-grade teacher at Westside Elementary School Read the full program with photos of our award winners and testimonials here: http://bit.ly/2021HBGTeachers Watch the recording here: https://youtu.be/WrfFIrmUJSk

Jeff Harding, updated us on the progress being made on vaccinating everyone involved with our local schools and the progress they are making towards restarting in-person classes. Jay Beckwith shared more on our developing Healdsburg Pollinators Project. Will Seppi talked about our upcoming Polio Plus fundraiser and the club’s 12th-anniversary event on April 1st. It is called “Tubesteaks under the stars”, and the marketing materials look amazing. Mark Bisignani updated us on the upcoming Teacher Appreciation event. While the schools are overwhelmed with the reopening process right now, this is very important to the teachers and principals. We plan to do a virtual event again this year. It was very effective last year. Lance Cottrell lead a discussion of options for our annual 4th of July event, and how we may need to adapt it in light of the likely COVID restrictions at that time. Finally, we shared a number of limericks of an appropriate nature but questionable quality.

We met just hours before the US Presidential inauguration to hear from one of our members, Ted Calvert. He talked about the various Open Space District Preserves around Healdsburg and many of the wonders contained within. You can learn more about these spaces at www.SonomaOpenSpace.org The Healdsburg High School Interact club took over the meeting and, as usual, enjoyed themselves and raised money by humiliating the membership with a quiz centered mostly on current pop-culture facts. We always have a great time each year when they join us.

The recording of our latest meeting is now available on YouTube. The guest speaker for September 2 meeting was our own Dr. Bob Mosby and his topic, at the request of our club, is 'unconscious bias.' Skip Brand, owner of Healdsburg Running Store has collaborated with RCHS Foundation 501c3 to raise funds to feed our firefighters. This idea kicked off last Friday and has raised close to $38,000 from our community. Thank you to all who have supported this effort. Carl Milfeit delivered his craft talk.

| Notice: We changed our 4th of July plans in response to the recent spike in COVID cases in Sonoma. The Sunrise Rotary Club invites all parents of children in Healdsburg to pick up bags of fun patriotic craft items on July 4.
Come to the Community Center beginning at 10:00 AM. Cars should enter at the north end of the parking lot and drive through the loop. We will place the bags in your trunk or back seat for safe hands-free delivery. Look for our large Rotary Duck out front along with our costumed ducks.
Parents, please post pictures of your children in working with these crafts or in 4th of July costumes to social media with #Healdsburg4th and tagging our club's social media accounts. We will highlight your photos on our website and social media. |

Highlights of the evening included a recap of our many accomplishments, induction of Colleen Householder, our 51st member, the Hat Presentation to Ed Smith, Paul Harris Presentations, and of course, the coveted Fool's Cup Award. President Pam presided along with special guests, PDGs Ken Moulton, Helaine Campbell, and Bruce Campbell. Excellent photos by our own Doug Pile can be seen in slideshow form under Photo Albums in the Bulletin or on the Home Page of our website. A special thanks goes to Dan Erikson, his committee, and their families for lending a hand.

Initiated by Nancy Palumbo, The Fool's Cup has come to honor the most spirited new member of the year. This year the Cup was passed from Jay Beckwith to Diane Bucher. Diane has thrown herself into the club's activities with dedication and an enormous capacity for fun, demonstrated here by her great smile. Diane must display the Fool's Cup for one year in her office and at the end of that year, add a little something that signifies her Jester experience. Past winners are: Susan Jones, Greg Marguglio, David Wasley, and Jay Beckwith.

The Vocational Services Committee will begin coaching Marce Becerra Juniors on March 2nd as they prepare their oral and slide presentations covering their recently completed three week internships in the community. Their reports will be given to a Review Board made up of teachers and community citizens on March 11th.
Later in March, the committee will be kicking off the mentoring program for all Marce Becerra Seniors. In order to graduate, each MB Senior must prepare a written report and oral presentation on their intended vocation. Sunrisers will be matched with Seniors based on their vocational choices and will then coach them in creating their final reports.

Juan Carlos Garcia Experiences the Summer Science Program
Juan Carlos participated in the five-week Summer Science Program at New Mexico Tech which focuses on astronomy. He gave an energy-filled account of his experience and the unforgetable impact that it has had on his life. The Summer Science Program is a five-week intensive educational experience for approximately 100 students from around the country who are chosen because of their academic success and their commitment to science. Healdsburg High School has had 3 participants in the program over the past 5 years and the Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise has proudly supported those students with scholarships that of-set some of the program's expenses.

He is a former Peace Corp Volunteer and speaks several languages. Not only was he a Representative of the U.S. Wine Industry in Washington D.C., he was also awarded a Presidential Appointment for the Obama Administration at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This year we are most fortunate to have a guest speaker with first hand experience in the South Pacific during WWII. Dr. Charles Greene served with the 3rd Marine Division from 1944-45 and participated in both campaigns for the islands of Guam and Iwo Jima. Following the cessation of hostilities, he was transferred to the 1st Marine Division in Northern China.
After the war, he persued his education at the University of Chicago under the GI Bill and received a Ph.D., in chemistry, in 1952. Working for Shell Oil Company for 30 years, he built commercial plants and invented the process to produce industrial chemicals, synthetic rubber and detergents.
Following retirement from Shell, he worked as an expert witness in the Federal courts in the United States, and also courts in England and Germany.
Currently he serves as a substitute teacher in science in Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Roseland and Santa Rosa school districts. He tutors chemistry and math two days per week at Santa Rosa High School.
Don't miss this opportunity to meet this distinguished member of our community.

The Planting Project was a huge success! Richard Hillman was the first there at 8:50 AM and Howard Brunner arrived at 8:58 AM. They were very proud of that so I thought I'd mention it. The remain three (Marjie Pettus, Pam Iverson and Susan Jones) of us arrived shortly after 9:00 AM. The short story was we planted close to 1,000 plants during the three and a half hours we were there. The weather was beautiful. City staff were great! The guys got to digging and the women and children got to planting. It was perfect! I can't walk today and I have it on good authority that another Rotarian is a tad stiff. Hats off to Richard, Howard and Pam as they left our planting project to go work at the Wonder League. Now that's dedication! Thanks for a great day everyone!

The HEALDSBURG WONDER LEAGUE. had its opening game on Saturday, May 14th and a fun time was had by all! League Commissioner
George Lawson organized a great day of fun for the participating Rotarians,
children with special needs and volunteers from the community. No one was injured and everyone got to bat, hit the ball and
run as many bases as they wanted. The children all seemed to have a
really great time playing ball and several adults watching were heard to say
that this is a wonderful activity for the children, the community and Sunrise
Rotary. As much as the kids enjoyed the day, I think all of us
participating and helping out enjoyed and appreciated the day as much as they
did.
The "Golden Voice" of Fred
Walter was heard announcing each player as they came to bat as well as
announcing close plays in the field. Terry "Zito" pitched (like
his name sake Barry Zito, is past his prime and way overpaid for his limited
skills) and has an ERA of 10.9 after this game. Sunrise Rotarians Jack Mallinson, Richard
Hillman, Sandi Passalaqua, Bob Durler, Pam Everson, Larry Orr, Howard Brunner,
Andy Esquivel and Archie Julian all assisted Commissioner Lawson by coaching,
acting as player buddies, registering participants and providing refreshments
(thanks Archie). The rumor is that Terry got to pitch because he pledged
a $50 donation to the RI Foundation for the privilege of playing ball with these children. It's a
standing offer - so if you want to pitch one of these games simply pledge more
than Terry's $50 and you too can pitch in the WONDER LEAGUE - the satisfaction
of being a part of this activity is well worth the donation.
There will be games each of the next 4
Saturdays, 1:30 pm at Foss Creek Community Center - Come out, participate,
and watch the kids have a wonderful time!

Presidents message;
The Healdsburg Sunrise Rotary Club is made up of enthusiastic members who focus on engaging in projects and activities to make life better in our community. This year the Club will celebrate the fourth anniversary of service in Healdsburg and the greater global community.
When the community needs help, Rotarians step forward. Service above self has been and will continue to be our proud tradition. We join together in a fellowship which uses different skills, abilities, and resources to assist in improving the lives of those around us. Our aim is to build a better community. Satisfaction results from providing service to others.
We have an outstanding group of officers, directors and Club members working together to provide service and benefits locally as well as globally. Our goal is to provide goodwill through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
Join us for breakfast any Wednesday morning (7 AM, Senior Center, Matheson St., Healdsburg) to learn more about our Club.
Yours in Rotary Service,
George R. Dutton, President, 2012-13

One-Hundred scholar athlete's were honored at a reception and awards ceremony sponsored by The Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise on May 17th at St. Eugene's Becker Center in Santa Rosa. The event was MC'd by our very own Andy Esquival who honored each of the one-hundred students individually. Welcoming the more than two-hundred students, family members and school staff in attendance was President-Elect George Dutton followed by an address by keynote speaker Bob Padecky, sports reporter from the Press Democrat. Under the leadership of Jack
Vallerga, the Scholar Athlete Committee awarded $9,400 in scholarships and awards during the evening. Andy called each of the twenty top scholar athletes to the stage and where they were given their cash awards or scholarship by President-Elect George and Chairman Jack.
Scholarship sponsoring organizations were; Friedman's Home Improvement, Summit State Bank, Redwood Empire Disposal, Edward Jones, State Farm Insurance, and The Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise. Additionally, an anonymous donor contributed $1,000 for scholarships. The steering committee of Jack Vallegra, Chairman, George Dutton, Will Seppi, Dan Erickson, Andy Esquival, Peter Witter and Terry Tremblay would like to thank club members Doug Pile and Lee Morton for their help at the awards ceremony.
